Field studies (2013)
In 2013, in the course of research on the state budget theme: "South-West Altai in the second half of the XVIII – 60S of the XIX centuries: ethno-social and socio-cultural aspects", folklore-ethnographic expeditions, covering the South-Western Altai were held.
Geographical space of the Southwest Altai includes the following territories:
- Altai district of Ile-Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture within Xinjiang of China (PRC);
- Ziryanovsk, Katon-Karagai, Kurchum and Zaisan districts of the East-Kazakhstan region.
The aim of the expedition is collection of folklore, toponymic, ethnographic materials on the history of the population, localized in the southwestern part of the Altai.
The tasks of the expedition:
• Identifying information about the tribal composition of the Kazakhs of Southwest Altai;
• Identifying nomadic ways and migrations of Kazakh tribes;
• Identifying places of the Kazakhs in China, the Slavic population of Southwest Altai;
• Collecting oral monuments: stories, proverbs, epics;
• Collecting information about the museums;
• Photo and video shooting of interviews and artefacts of the Kazakhs.
Folklore-ethnographic expedition in the study is a qualitative method of seasonal data collection. The basic methodology of the fieldwork was in the form of oral history interviews with the population.
This method allows us to "give voice" to neglected segments of the society, since it reflects the micro-history of the region in the form of individual memories, local folk legends, history, created from the «bottom» (history from below), daily life, etc. Evaluation of this method as a qualitative research is based on the possibility to view individual messages as autonomous information, independent from the written source identity constructed by the individual.
Using oral history, based on interviews, the researchers tried to get new information, new knowledge and personal understanding of the history of South-Western Altai.
